At Allendale Veterinary, we customize our vaccine recommendations for the specific needs of your pet.
"Core" vaccines are those that every dog and cat will need to receive as puppies / kittens. The core vaccines generally include only rabies and distemper shots.
A general guideline for puppy/kitten vaccines is as follows
| Puppy | Age | Protection From |
|---|---|---|
| 6-8 weeks | Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza, Parvovirus | |
| 9-11 weeks | D,H,P,P | |
| 12-16 weeks | D,H,P,P - Rabies |
| Kitten | Age | Protection From |
|---|---|---|
| 6-8 weeks | Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, Panleukopenia | |
| 9-11 weeks | FVRCP | |
| 12-16 weeks | FVRCP - Rabies |
The first vaccine dose provides a temporary immunity and it is important that each booster be given to provide a lasting, protective response. The above schedule is a general guideline only.
Other "elective" vaccines may be recommended for your pet depending on his/her lifestyle or risk. These include Feline Leukemia, for cats who spend a lot of time outdoors. They also include Lyme disease vaccine and Leptospirosis vaccine for dogs. The kennel cough vaccine ( aka Bordetella) is recommended for dogs who frequent boarding kennels, grooming shops, dog shows, or busy dog runs.
Our doctors are happy to discuss your own pet's needs with you. We will help you decide which vaccines are appropriate for your pet.
